Libya: NATO destroyed 25 tanks Gaddafi

The NATO air forces have destroyed 25 tanks in the government army around the Libyan cities of Ajdabiya and Misrata, announced Sunday the Western media, referring to press service of the Alliance.

Fourteen tanks were destroyed near the town of Misrata (west), controlled by insurgents and besieged by the troops of Gaddafi for nearly a month and a half. Eleven other tanks were neutralized on the road leading to the strategic town of Ajdabiya (east). Saturday, government forces have violently bombarded the latter, before undertaking an attack on all fronts.

Earlier, NATO had claimed to have destroyed 17 tanks Gaddafi and a military aircraft intercepted the insurgents over the weekend.

Protests against Muammar Gaddafi, in power for over 40 years, began in Libya in mid-February before degenerating into armed protest. On 17 March the Security Council of the UN adopted a resolution providing for the establishment of an air exclusion zone over the country and allowing the use of force to protect the population of Libyan troops of Colonel Gaddafi. The international operation began March 19, involving among others Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Spain, the United States, France, Britain and Italy. On 31 March, the U.S. transferred the command of NATO operations
